Where to begin with Yo La Tengo? The band is an institution, universally recognized for their relentless experimentation and fierce independence. Their records range from ambient surrealism, to exemplary indie rock, to classic covers of standard pop songs. They are as elusive as they are accessible, and as mild mannered as they are maniacal. From their luminous albums and indispensable soundtrack work, to their stunning live shows and downplayed magnificence, there is only one Yo La Tengo.
At the heart of the trio is the husband and wife duo of guitarist/vocalist Ira Kaplan and drummer/vocalist Georgia Hubley. As unassuming as anyone in their hometown of Hoboken New Jersey, the two have spent over 25 years making artistic and intelligent rock music. Joined at the musical hip with bassist/vocalist James McNew, the band has seemingly covered every square inch of musical territory with their alternatively hypnotic and startling mix of dreamy pop and abrasive rock. This unique blend of the brilliant and unpretentious is swimmingly sublime in every sense of the word.
Yo La Tengo is that rare band who can do anything they want and still leave us wanting more. Their latest, Popular Songs, continues that tradition with honesty, bravery and unpredictability. And with over a dozen albums already under their wing, the group is poised to take their most astounding flights yet. CHARLIE SWANSON
