Formerly known as Management, MGMT's Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben
Goldwasser first met at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT
circa 2002. The now Brooklyn duo were brought together by their common love of mystic
paganism, psychotropic sounds, and the belief that songs could be
sad, profound, and funny at the same time.
The band takes the hallucinatory power of Animal Collective and
the silky pop-soul of Hall & Oates and blends it into their brand
of glammy, 'peace and love',' headband friendly new-wave synth pop
for the masses.
The two have come a long way since their early,
more intimate on-campus live shows that centered around noisy
electronic loops and experimentation. Actually, a group of NYU
students who were fans of this experimental version of the band
formed an indie label, Cantora Records, in order to issue the very
first MGMT commercial release, Time To Pretend (a 6-song EP), two
songs of which survived to the full length, Oracular Specatular.
MGMT now embrace traditional rock instruments and live drums into
the mix to produce stellar affect. Since signing to Columbia
Records for their debut full-length, MGMT
have been included on bills with Of Montreal, Yeasayer, and even
Paul McCartney at Fenway Park in Boston. MGMT still has a lot of
narcotic 70's glam to throw our way in the coming years, starting
with making impressions for this year's Treasure Island Music Festival. CAROLINE PARTAMIAN
