Seeing Beach House perform live is like witnessing first hand what a fantasy ‘80s prom would look and sound like, slow dancing the night away with an orchestra of synth tones and dream pop melodies. Especially so, on their 2010 release, Teen Dream, where Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand left behind the slow and subtle atmospherics of their previous two albums for a more concentrated, and hook oriented sound. Written through a period of intense seclusion, and recorded in a church-turned-studio in Upstate New York, the result is an album bursting with dance-worthy rhythms and vocal melodies placed confidently in the forefront of their songs. While decidedly more accessible than the slowly building melodies of records past, Beach House do not wander far from the fuzzy tones and mellow nuances that have captivated patient listeners since their debut in 2006. It is through Teen Dream, that we are able to view the graduation of two artists from demure freshmen into the extroverted musicians that they were meant to be. ANNE OSTROWSKI
