There are plenty of interesting new sounds coming out of San Francisco these days, but nothing that sounds quite like Maus Haus. Carefully thought out layers of synthesizers, winds, drums, bass, and melodic group vocals comprise the music's denseness. Upon listening it is clearly the output of a group of good friends with wildly different tastes, collecting ideas and inspiration from the last half-century of experimental and pop music.
In the past year, Maus Haus has charted nationally at #47 on CMJ's College Music Charts with their debut record Lark Marvels, and have won awards from San Francisco publications, “Best New Synth Rockers” (SF Weekly) and “Band of the Year” (The Deli SF). Recently, they've kept their legs busy running up and down the West Coast for dates with Autolux, Rafter, and Javelin as well as making a lengthier trip to the Midwest and East Coast to join School of Seven Bells and Frog Eyes.
Maus Haus's newest 7" release, Winter/Zig Zag, is a perfect slice of their schizophrenia: a combination of a sunny psych venture crossed with a maze of sounds that sonically reference Bollywood, Cambodian Rocks! compilations, and old spy films. The 7” is rounded out with a 5-song digital EP, Sea-Sides, giving the listener a complete taste of everywhere this band has gone so far, while still hinting towards the future.
